Victoria’s road toll continues to climb and the best Labor Road Safety Minister Ben Carroll can do, is pull together a roundtable meeting.
During the COVID-19 pandemic there are thousands less drivers on the road. And yet, we continue to see more people die, including three deaths on Friday.
If Minister Carroll is serious about improving road safety and reducing accidents in Victoria he should immediately:
- Reinstate the $2.9 billion the Andrews Labor Government ripped out of the TAC for road safety
- Reinstate the Parliamentary Road Safety Committee the Andrews Labor Government cancelled
- Guarantee all road safety speed cameras are on, after a recent report by the Road Safety Camera Commissioner stated up to 18 per cent were off, for up to two-and-a-half years
- Match the Liberal National’s policy to increase roadside drug testing by 1000 per week
- Invest in fixing country roads, with the conditions of roads in Victoria at their worst in history and causing accidents in regional Victoria
This is more of the same from Labor, who only last year responded to Victoria’s rising road toll with another talkfest. There are things that can be started today, to save lives.

“The Andrews Labor Government’s record on road safety is appalling. They have ripped $2.9 billion from the TAC, cut investments in country roads and removed the parliamentary committee that recommended changes like seatbelts.
“If Minister Carroll wants to reduce the road toll, he must immediately commit to supporting the Liberal Nationals’ policy to increase drug testing in Victoria by 1000 a week, with drug driving now a bigger killer than drink driving, this action will save lives.
“We must see less talk and more action. We urge the Andrews Labor Government to commit to these five solutions.”
