A Liberal Nationals government will turbocharge Victoria’s reputation as the sporting and
events capital of the world by re-establishing the Victorian Major Events
The new Victorian Major Events Company will also have a specific mandate to attract
major events to regional Victoria as part of the Liberal Nationals plan to
decentralise our population by spreading economic growth across our great
In 2016, Daniel Andrews killed off the Victorian Major Events Company and replaced it
with the bureaucracy known as Visit Victoria.
The VMEC, originally the Melbourne Major Events Company – was initiated by the Kirner
government following Melbourne’s failure to secure the 1996 Olympic Games,
among other lost major events.
We had used a bureaucratic approach that was too slow and too unwieldy to give our state the best chance of succeeding in the highly competitive global market for major
Joan Kirner surprised many on her own side of politics by appointing former Lord Mayor and well-known Liberal Party identity Ron Walker to chair it. That decision recognised the fact that not all wisdom resides on one side of politics, as well as the fact that Ron Walker was an extraordinary individual who was passionate about his state and was prepared to put his time, his effort and his amazing connections to work for the benefit of the people of Victoria.
In the year where we sadly saw Ron Walker’s passing, we reflect on what a legacy he and his colleagues at the VMEC left: the Formula 1 Grand Prix, White Night, the Presidents’ Cup, Liverpool FC v Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park, Melbourne Winter Masterpieces at the NGV, the Grace Kelly exhibition at Bendigo, State of Origin rugby at the MCG, the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, Wicked and The Book of Mormon just to name a few.
The VMEC thrived under the Kirner, Kennett, Bracks, Brumby, Baillieu and Napthine governments for good reason; because nobody was better at what they did and they achieved great things for this state.
But Daniel Andrews thinks he knows better and killed it off.
Major events are a critical economic and jobs driver for our state. We cannot afford to give
up our competitive advantage in that space because of the ideological blinkers
of Daniel Andrews and his Treasurer.
That’s why a Guy government will bring back a revitalised Victorian Major Events Company.
We will harness the best and brightest of our citizens to help attract the best and
brightest events to our great state.
Through a new VMEC, we will take an aggressive approach to not only keeping what we have, but in attracting more great opportunities to bring the best to our state including
regional Victoria. When we say we are going to spread economic growth
across our state, we mean it.
Under a Liberal Nationals government, a revitalised Victorian Major Events Company will turbocharge our major sporting and events reputation and deliver those opportunities right across our state.
